BC Web Address for Faculty and Department FTP Accounts

The BC URL:

It is the policy at Brooklyn College to provide free web accounts for all departments and faculty at the College. The URL's at the college are established according to the following format:
   • For Department:
     http://depthome.brooklyn.cuny.edu/department-name/

   • For Academic Courses/Programs:
     http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/department/faculty-name/

   • For Faculty (personal use):
     http://userhome.brooklyn.cuny.edu/faculty-name

Occasionally, faculty or departments request a URL that deviates from the above format with the department name first. (for example, department-name.brooklyn.cuny.edu). Establishing such a URL (that deviates from the established format) requires designating an individual web server specifically for that account. Unfortunately, resources are limited and we cannot provide individual servers for each account.

A Note about the BC Web Address:

Brooklyn College is part of the CUNY system. As a result, all Brooklyn College-related sites (department sites, faculty pages, etc.) must have "brooklyn.cuny.edu" in the address. Custom domain names (anything other than .brooklyn.cuny.edu ) must be registered and approved through InterNIC (the regulatory agency which monitors domain names). There are charges associated with this process. ITS does not register custom domain names. Faculty or departments who would like to register a custom domain name need to either do that directly with InterNIC themselves or through a third party Internet service provider.

E-mail Policy

To: The Campus Community
From: Steve G. Little Acting Vice President for Finance & Administration
Date: November 30, 1998
Re: College's Policy on the Appropriate Use of E-mail and Computer Resources

The College's e-mail system has proven to be an excellent tool for enhancing communication. In the last several months, however, there have been a few incidents of improper use of the e-mail system. Therefore I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the College's policy regarding the use of e-mail and computer resources. Our policy is a modified version of a policy statement prepared by the University's Computer Policy Committee, reviewed by the University Faculty Senate and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs. The full text of the policy appears below. I would like to emphasize a few particulars. Individual users broadcasting e-mail messages, i.e., announcements being sent to all or most campus users, are not permitted. If you have an announcement regarding a matter of widespread institutional interest, please forward it via e-mail to Mark Gold, Director of Computer Services (mark@brooklyn.cuny.edu). Please allow at least two (2) days for the announcement to be broadcast via e-mail. Since the College's policy prohibits "the use of computer resources for profit making" and similar "private purposes," unsolicited e-mails sent to all or most campus users inviting them to purchase goods and/or services are not permitted. Please take a few moments to review the College's policy. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Gold at extension 5861 or at his e-mail address (given above). Thanks! And happy e-mailing!
