*A Zip file is a compressed file. Many files distributed over the Internet are first 'zipped' to make the file size as small as possible. Before you can use the programs, you must 'unzip' them with an application such as WinZip or PKZIP for Windows. For more information, visit http://www.sophos.com/support/faqs/howtouse.html

You can also download latest virus identity (IDE) files. Virus identity (IDE) files are produced to enable Sophos Anti-Virus to detect viruses which are not included in the current CD version. They are not a replacement for the regular monthly upgrades. For more information, visit http://www.sophos.com/downloads/ide/

The Atrium and Wolfe Computer Labs and classrooms at Brooklyn College are the largest and most accessible in CUNY and are open 7 days a week, up to 15 hours each weekday. The labs have several software operating environments and applications, and provide adaptive technology devices for students with disabilities.

Access
The Atrium and Wolfe Labs are open to every BC student with a valid student ID. Usage is on a first come, first serve basis, subject to appropriate use and behavior. Faculty may use these labs, but are encouraged to use the specialized facilities in the Faculty Training and Development Lab in the Library. BC alumni are allowed access to the lab subject to availability provided they bring their alumni card. Students from other CUNY schools are also allowed access on a lower priority basis and subject to availability.

Support and Training
The lab staff conducts User Training seminars on e-mail and on the use of the equipment; manuals and informational sheets are available at the front desk. Lab Monitors assist students with start-up and equipment use, but cannot assist with programming or other “content” related tasks. Academic departments that require detailed “content assistance” may want to make arrangements for peer tutoring within the confines of the lab facilities.

Housekeeping for Faculty Accounts

Faculty/Staff Email Services | CUNY RACF UserID Application

Leaving Your Data Behind?

There are a number of computer-related housekeeping chores that we recommend before leaving CUNY for the summer or for an extended leave. If these chores are performed systematically, not only will computer resources be used more efficiently but your own resources, data, and accounting funds will be protected against inadvertent or deliberate misuse in your absence.

Annual Renewal of Accounts

All computer accounts on the CUNY/CIS system are renewed annually on July 1st. Before leaving for the summer, contact your Campus Liaison Officer to arrange for renewal for the upcoming year.

Put Your Computer Account on Vacation

If you do not anticipate using your account for over a week, you can have your Liaison Officer secure your account during the time you are away. Userids can be made invalid for logon to assure that no unauthorized use occurs during your absence. To reactivate an account upon your return, contact your Campus Liaison Officer.

Your Electronic Mail Can be Forwarded or Stored

If you have an account on a machine that connects to one of the networks that CUNYVM is connected to, you can arrange to have electronic mail addressed to your CUNYVM userid forwarded to that account. Your Campus Liaison Officer will arrange this for you. If you do not have another account to which electronic mail can be forwarded, you can request that electronic mail arriving at CUNY during your absence be held for you. (Electronic mail left unread in your reader is routinely purged.) To have your mail forwarded, contact your Campus Liaison Officer for a Faculty Account Services form or type HELP FORM FACACCT. Note that mail cannot be forwarded or stored for periods exceeding 18 months - also see more information below about our policy regarding mail-forwarding. To have your mail held, issue:

HOLDMAIL

If you receive mail from an electronic "mailing list", we encourage you to unsubscribe (or have mail temporarily suspended) for the duration of your leave to keep the mail being handled to a minimum. If you have access to an account at another site you may be able to resubscribe so that mail is sent directly to that node.

For BITNET lists, always send mail or a message to LISTSERV@node (and NOT to the list itself) and specify in the body of mail or message:

SIGNOFF listname or SET NOMAIL

For Internet mailing lists you would generally send mail to listname-request@node.domain and specify in the Subject: and the body of mail:

SIGNOFF listname

If you need help, call the CUNY/CIS Support Center, (212) 541-0981.

Always ...Keep your account and data secure. Change your logon password frequently, thoroughly (e.g., don't just rearrange the letters) and cryptically (i.e., it should NOT be obvious). You are strongly discouraged from giving your logon password to others. (Remember that you are responsible for actions taken by anyone using your account.) Although CUNY/CIS performs routine backups of disks, the backups may not coincide with the creation of an important file and they are not kept forever. It is therefore recommended that you back up very important data to your own tape. For more information about CUNY/CIS backups, or doing your own backups, speak with your Campus Liaison Officer, or call the CUNY/CIS Support Center, (212) 541-0981.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Below is CUNY/CIS's policy on forwarding mail as described in the mailer document INFO FORWarding. (Send the message TELL MAILER INFO for information on how to receive this and other documents from mailer.) This is CUNY/CIS's policy regarding forwarding of your electronic mail to another electronic address. Some of the "rules" may seem silly... turns out that mail forwarding isn't as simple as it sounds; please understand our position. If you have special needs, please talk to us.

CUNY/CIS will be glad to forward your electronic mail for a period not to exceed 18 months provided all of the following conditions are met:

1) One of the following, or similar, conditions exist:

a) You will be away where you will not have easy access to CUNYVM or
b) You will no longer have an account on CUNYVM (e.g. you are no longer employed by CUNY) or
c) Your userid has changed (e.g. you are now working for another branch of CUNY).

2) Your initial request for mail forwarding must be approved by your Campus Laison Officer. A form to facilitate this is available by typing HELP FORM FACACCT. If you do not know who your Campus Liaison is, a listing may be found by typing HELP CUNY gg, where gg is the 2 letter group code of your campus. Subsequent modifications to your forwarding request, such as changing your forwarding address or requesting an EARLIER termination date can be made directly to: CTRCU@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU

3) You should unsubscribe from any mailing lists (i.e. LISTSERV type lists) and resubscribe from your new address (if you wish). If you do not unsubscribe, CUNY/CIS may unsubscribe you and/or terminate mail forwarding.

4) CUNY/CIS will not forward mail from one CUNY system to another unless your CUNYVM id is also invalidated. In other words, if you wish your mail forwarded from your CUNYVM id to your id on, say, a computer at Queens College, then your CUNYVM id must be made invalid for signon.

Further notes about mail forwarding:

Once we receive your request for forwarding (via your Campus Liaison) we can usually start forwarding your mail within a day or so. If any mail is waiting for you when we initiate forwarding it will also be forwarded.

Any mail coming to CUNYVM via "official" gateways, such as via MAILER or SMTP, will be forwarded immediately. If mail arrives another way, such as via RSCS, mail forwarding may take longer to establish.

When you return to CUNY, it is probably a good idea to send mail to CTRCU@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU. This will remind us to unforward your mail. If you have not returned early, this should have taken place already; however, a reminder is useful in either case to help us make sure you are well served.

If you are leaving CUNY permanently and do not have another electronic address, keep in mind that many commercial services (e.g. CompuServe, America OnLine, MCI Mail and many others) will allow you access to electronic mail for a fee. Some non-profit groups might also be available. In general, we should have no trouble forwarding your mail to such services.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact the CUNY/CIS

Support Center at CTRCU@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU or via phone at 212-541-0981.

SALI (SIMS Access LAN Interface)

Contact: Alex Rotkop (alexr@brooklyn.cuny.edu)
SALI is a program that provides extracts of SIMS information. Authorized users can view or print class rosters, student transcripts, and other SIMS related data. SALI is a Windows-based application designed to supplement SIMS reporting facilities and reduce the technical staff’s need to produce both standard and ad hoc reports.

SALI was tested and demonstrated for the CUNY Board of Directors and CUNY-wide College Computing Managers. They were enthusiastic about its practical uses and user-friendly features. For example, SALI’s sort-and-selection options provide a variety of on-screen and printed inquiries for:

Class Rosters                 Mailing Labels
Export files                     Student Transcripts
Open-Closed Sections     Sections Taught by an Instructor

SALI locates students by partial or full name or by student ID number. It can search a course by reference numbers or by entering other detailed identifiers. To provide the most current student information, the SALI database is updated daily from the CUNY mainframe SIMS systems. Multiple term records are maintained and updated. SALI can produce tabular reports of student records based on criteria including:

GPA                              Residence
Major Code                    Division (Day, Evening, Grad)
Ethnicity                        Admission Status

SALI does not require specialized printers. All outputs can be used on-screen and printed on a local or LAN based Windows compatible printer. The SALI client software is available for Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT.

SALI is a secure system and uses the most advanced security technology. It provides degrees of user-level security with the ability to admit or restrict access through personal IDs configured for specific disciplines or courses.

ITS publishes a SALI Guide to assist users with the system. The Guide may be obtained from ITS (0607 Plaza - x5861) and is also available online in ITS Publications.
